19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 victories have been won on hard surfaces

A resurgent Medvedev secured his first trophy for nearly 30 months with victory over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

The athlete, a former number one, has experienced a challenging season, achieving just one match at the big events and experiencing a meltdown at the US Open.

His varied form on the tennis tour - and issues with his serving in especial - led to him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally separating with long-time coach Gilles Cervara.

Now training with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently improved in the last few weeks - culminating in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over challenger Moutet.

This represents Medvedev's maiden trophy since the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hard court after that period of the previous year.

Victory also signifies the Russian has achieved twenty-one victories at twenty-one distinct tournaments.

"For the first time I am participating in a competition with my children together, so to get a title is especially meaningful," said ranked player Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my child Victoria, because the maiden victory I got when my older daughter my daughter was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had been defeated in his last six title deciders, featuring in the German tournament in the past months.

His counter-punching play style and regular outbursts on the playing surface had caused commentators to wonder if his ability to perform at the elite level was concluded.

However the player has made changes in the last few weeks, striving to come to the net and perform aggressively, supported by an better serving game.

The champion recovered from a break down in the opening set against the challenging opponent, securing four of the last five points to take the lead.

The competitors swapped break points in the following set before the Frenchman, bidding for his initial professional victory, gained dominance to push for a decider.

The opponent saved 4 initial opportunities in a close deciding set before the champion broke to 15 to serve for the match.

Fittingly, the winner clinched victory with a point at the net area, with the Frenchman unable to control a shot after over two and a half hours.
