The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
