In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
