Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to contest specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
